The Enemy?

Our BFF, the steak, has taken a hit this past week with a study completed by Harvard researchers that claims red meat is your enemy if you wish to live (see study.) It “went viral” (a new fb/youtube term that means lots of people heard about it but few read it) and has brought out some interesting responses.

The best I’ve read so far is from Gary Taubes who insists here that such “studies” should include scientific process. Seems reasonable. Robb Wolf adds his .02 worth and there are countless others who chime in. Smart people can read through these mountains of opinions and facts and decide for themselves what to believe.

But what about the others? The hundreds of thousands of people who watch Dr. Ozman and believe everything he has to say? The people who read weight loss wonders on his advice such as Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman, MD (so it must be amazing) that labels Fat as an appetite stimulant (huh?) and believes there is more protein in a cup of broccoli than a steak (that made me LULZ.)

Diet books and studies are not new. People will buy them, few will succeed only because they’re changing their drastically unhealthy diet and most will fail because they do not want to change their drastically unhealthy diet long term. The media will churn out BS as fast as they can. All I ask is that you approach all of the information with reason and a demand of scientific findings rather than “observations” or authors who direct you to past articles they’ve written to support their own opinions. Happy reading.
